Bridgewater, NJ - The Bridgewater Township Police Department Traffic Safety Bureau and the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Collision Analysis Reconstruction Team (C.A.R. Team) are investigating a single car, fatal, motor vehicle crash that occurred on May 18, 2020 at 9:36 p.m. The crash occurred on Garretson Road near the intersection of Hill Lane. The vehicle involved left the roadway, struck a tree and subsequently became engulfed in flames. Members of the Green Knoll Fire Department and North Branch Fire Department responded and extinguished the fire. Members of the Green Knoll Rescue Squad and Martinsville Rescue Squad also responded to the scene and rendered aid.
At the time of the crash the driver of the involved vehicle had not been identified. With the assistance of the Northern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office, the driver has been identified as 22 year old Brian Conklin of Bridgewater, NJ. Conklin had been pronounced dead at the scene.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation and no charges have been filed at this time. However, preliminary findings suggest that Conklin was driving at an excessive speed.
