Firearms Handling and Storage

1. Treat every firearm as if it were loaded.
2. Always keep the muzzle of the firearm pointed in a safe direction.
3. Always keep your finger off the trigger and outside the trigger guard unless you intend to fire the weapon.
4. Wear appropriate ear and eye protection when discharging the firearm.
5. If there are children in the home, use child safety locks or other commercially available locking mechanisms on your firearms and/or keep your firearms locked in a secure location accessible to adults only. Keep your ammunition locked in a secure location away from the firearms.
6. Familiarize yourself with and obey all Federal, State, and local laws regarding the purchase,
possession, carrying, use, storage, and disposition/sale of firearms.

As a part of the New Jersey “KeepSafe” Program, the state is encouraging New Jersey gun owners to store their firearms safely. The state is offering a $5 instant rebate when you purchase a trigger lock along with your firearm. Remember- The use of a trigger lock is only one aspect of responsible firearm storage. Firearms should be stored, unloaded, and locked in a location that is both separate from their ammunition and inaccessible to children.

NEW JERSEY’s FAMILIES AND CHILDREN ARE
PRECIOUS—KEEP THEM SAFE!!!

Under the New Jersey Code of Criminal Justice, a person who knows or reasonably should know that a minor is likely to gain access to a loaded firearm at a premises under the persons control commits a disorderly persons offense if a minor gains access to the firearm, unless the person: (1) stores the firearm in a securely locked door or container, (2) Stores the firearm in a location which a reasonable person would believe to be secure; or secures the firearm with a trigger lock.
